| | | | Teaching jobs in Bolivia | | | | Like all other areas in Bolivian life, education too is divided into rural and urban areas. Rural illiteracy remains high even when the rest of the country is becoming increasing literate. This difference stems partly from the fact that in the rural areas children are forced to contribute economically to their family.
On an average, children from rural areas attend school for 4.2 years while an urban student receives an education on an average of 9.4 years. There also exists a gender divide. Females, on an average receives about 1.5 years of schooling less than the males. | The illiteracy rate is 19.6% for females and 7.4% for that of males. Chronic political instability hindered the development of education in Bolivia. But the arrival of a missionary teaching team from Belgium in 1990s enhanced the prospect of teaching jobs in Bolivia. With the missionaries working in Bolivia and with an effort from the private sector, the number of teaching jobs in Bolivia is on an increase.
The higher centers for education includes the University of Bolivia and a variety of public and private institutes. The University of Bolivia which happens to be a consortium of eight public universities and one private university, is the only post secondary school that awarded degrees. Other schools offered technical training in fine arts, commercial arts, as well as teacher training. Although the education system recorded some improvements in enrollment in 1970s and 1980s but the data shows that only 35 percent of the eligible age group attended secondary school. Even then significant disparities is maintained between male and female enrollment rates. Efforts have been made to increase the rate of female attendance in school but this worked against the economic policy of the country.
