Switzerland is a country located in Central Europe, east of France and north of Italy. Its climate is temperate but varies with altitude. It is a Federal Republic and its monetary unit is the Swiss Franc. Switzerland is a peaceful, prosperous and stable modern market economy, with low unemployment, a highly skilled labour force and a per capita GDP larger than that of the bog western European economies.
The number of student’s interested in pursuing higher studies in Swiss Universities are constantly increasing. There are 12 official higher education establishments in Switzerland. The academic year in the Universities of Switzerland is divided into two semesters: winter from October to March, and summer from April to July. The first academic exam is for about four to five years and differs depending upon the the course.
The Swiss academic degrees are the Lizentiat/Licence, the diploma, and the PhD.
Then there are a number of private colleges offering courses that are not publicly recognized.
To apply for studies in the universities of Switzerland, minimum age of the students is 18. Good knowledge of the language of instruction like German, French or Italian is asked. Foreign students have to pay high fees than the native students.
Students have to apply in writing to the university they want to get admission and choose their field of interest. Once students receive confirmation of acceptance from a Swiss university, they have to take an entrance examination. Entrance examinations are held twice a year (summer session 2008: 11 June - 20 June 08; autumn session 2008: 27 August - 5 September 08; summer session 2009: 10 June - 19 June).
