Tourism is an important contributor to the economy of Indonesia. For its unique culture and tropical climate throughout the year Indonesia attracts millions of national and international tourists every year. There is a high percentage of the population which is engaged in different tourism jobs in Indonesia. There are more than 17,000 islands in Indonesia and the country has got the second largest shoreline in the world. Nature and culture are two major factors that have helped the tourism industry in Indonesia to flourish.
There are more than 300 ethnic groups and more than 250 distinct languages in Indonesia. It has got wonderful beaches like Bali, Lombok, Bintan, Nias island, Karimunjawa, Togian island and banda island. On the other hand there are cultural tourist destinations like Toraja, Prambanan, Borobudur temples, Yogyakarta, and Minangbau from where the country earns a lot of foreign revenues. Presently the ministry of culture and tourism oversees the tourism industry. In the recent times resorts, hotels, spas, restaurants, fishing lodges and other types of accommodations have been developed in the tourist spots specially in the beaches in large numbers and have employed a large number of people in different tourism jobs in Indonesia.
With the rise in percentage of tourists arrival in the country it is expected that lot more opportunity would be created for people to get tourism jobs in Indonesia.
Posts offered: Hotel and restaurant jobs are the most common form of tourism jobs in every country and among hotel jobs two types of services are most popular: Catering services and hospitality and housekeeping services. The different posts offered in these two kinds of services are given below:
Apart from these many small jobs are available in hospitality and tourism industry. There are different travel agencies that recruits people as tour managers, tour guides, travel agents, reservation agents cabin crews cooks etc.
Educational qualification: For high-level posts in catering and hospitality services MBA in hotel management is generally sought with good personal quality and public relation skills. Nothing is specified about qualifications for other jobs.
Work experience: For high-level posts a previous work experience of three-five years is preferable. However, in Indonesia some big hotels give people chances to work as interns.
Working hours: For managerial level jobs normal duty hours is eight-nine hours per day. For low-grade jobs like tourist guides, cooks etc, the duty level is unspecified.
Pay scale: Nothing is specified about pay scale for tourism jobs in Indonesia.
