Interview Questions for L-1(Company Transferee)

An L1 Visa is issued to anyone who works for an organization that has offices in his native country as well as the United States. With this visa, an individual is allowed to relocate to the office of the concerned organization in the US. It is issued only to individuals who have worked for at least one year continuously within the last three visits to the US. The organization that the applicant is working for must be related to the company in the United States in one of the following ways:

  • The two companies must be owned by one parent company
  • One must be a branch and the other must be the headquarters
  • One must be the parent company and the other a subsidiary
  • The companies must be affiliated to one another in some way

There are basically two types of L1 visas that are issued:

  • The L1A Visa – issued to executives and managers
  • The L2 Visa – issued to employees who have some specialized knowledge

In either case, the individual must pass a personal interview that will comprise of questions about the current job, the proposed work in the United States and other specifics related to the type of visa that he or she has applied for.


Interview questions related to the current job

  • Which is the company that you work for?
  • How long have you been working in this company? What is your current designation?
  • What is the salary that you draw in your company currently?
  • Name a few clients that you have worked for in the past.
  • Which company did you work for before joining this one?
  • What is the strength of the team you are working for? In this team how many are in the US and how many are out of the US?

Interview Questions About Proposed Work After Your Corporate Transfer

  • Name the client that you will be working for when you are in the US.
  • Give some details about the type of work that your client does.
  • What are your roles and responsibilities in your company after your transfer to the US?
  • During your work period in the US, what accommodation arrangements will be made?
  • Who will you report to during your working period in the US?
  • What is the compensation that you will receive during this period?  Will you be included in the US payroll or in the payroll of your country?
  • What is the reason for this transfer? Can this job not be completed without your transfer?
  • How long will you be staying in the US?
  • During this stay, will you receive any additional compensation?
  • Who will be your point of contact during your stay? Is this person related to you?
  • Will you be working with more than one client when you are in the US?


Interview Questions for L1 category

  • What specialized skills do you have?
  • How are your skills utilized by your company?
  • Does your job include any particular kind of specialization?
  • What is your contribution to the company?
  • Why can’t your job be done by members from the team in the US?
  • Will you be customizing something for the client that you are going to be working for?
  • Why have you been chosen to go to the US instead of anyone else in your organization?

Interview questions for L2 interview

  • Do you have any budgetary authority in your organization?
  • Will you be reporting to someone when you are in the US?
  • What are your roles and responsibilities in this company?
  • What is the purpose of your visit to the US?

These are only prototype questions that you can expect. However, there may be several other questions that will be asked. Irrespective of the type of question asked, remember to answer honestly and confidently.
