Teaching Jobs in Malaysia hold a very important place in the employment sector. The education system in Malaysia is well organized into primary, secondary, pre-university and tertiary (including post- graduate courses, etc.). Malaysia has around 27 Teacher training colleges, providing training to teachers for primary and lower secondary levels. Instead of constantly upgrading teachers, the Malaysian education system lays emphasis on maintaining a very high quality or standard of instruction.
Since the 1990s major changes have been brought in to boost the education sector in Malaysia. Primary Level
Qualifications: A Diploma in Teacher’s Training Program for primary or any other level, or, A Graduate Degree in Education or Teaching is required. Good skills in teaching kindergarten courses, and fluency in Bahasa, Mandarin and English. The candidate should be a legal resident of Malaysia or holding a legal work and stay permit.
Work Experience: Usually no relevant experience is asked for. In most cases fresh candidates are hired.
Working Hours: Usually ranges around 6 to 7 hours per day with class sessions around 40 minutes per class.
Pay Scale: Salary for a primary level teacher in Malaysia usually ranges between RM 1400 to RM 1600 per month (approx.). Salaries can go up to RM 6000 in case of private or foreign schools.
Secondary Level
Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree along with a Degree or Diploma in Education or teacher’s training. For language teachers particularly English, TESL or IELTS certificates are required. Fluency in English, Bahasa and Mandarin are called for.
Work Experience: Work Experience for secondary level teaching usually ranges from 0 to 3 or more years of relevant experience.
Working Hours: Working hours ranges around 6 to 7 hours per day.
Pay Scale: Pay Scale for Secondary Level teachers in Malaysia usually ranges between RM 1600 to RM 2000 (approx.). For other private or foreign schools salaries can range higher.
University Level
Qualifications: PhD in the relevant field. Candidates pursuing or willing to pursue PhD are also encouraged to apply. In that case a Master’s Degree in the relevant subject is required. For University level positions of Lecturer or Professors/assistant Professors, only Malaysian Citizens are eligible to apply. Certified skills in local language, Bahasa, and fluency in English, Mandarin and in some cases Arabic are also required.
Work Experience: Usually not specified. But 2 to3 years of valuable teaching experience in the related field is preferred.
Working Hours: Not Specified.
Pay Scale: Pay Scale for University level jobs in Malaysia usually ranges between RM 35,000 to RM 70,000 per annum (approx.).
