In colonial times, education in Paraguay was restricted to the upper echelons of the society. Education system changed vastly in Paraguay after its Independence in 1811.
As the education system underwent great and significant transformation, teaching jobs in Paraguay also started to increase. The educational system of Paraguay is divided into pre and higher educational system. The age of compulsory education is from 6-14 years of age.
The school system of Paraguay is divided into:
Pre-elementary: This stage is known as Educación Initial, Here the academic program lasts for one year and the age level is from 5-6 years.
Basic: Here the length of the academic program is for nine years and the age level is from 6-14 years. This stage is known as Educación Escolar Básica (EEB).

Secondary: Here the duration of the academic program is for 3 years and the age level is from 15-17. This stage is known as Educación Media and the awarded certificate or diploma is called Bachillerato.
Professional: This stage is known as Formación Profesional Media. Here the length is also for 3 years and the age level is from 15-17.
Universities provide the higher education, which can be both public and private. There exists a non university level which is known as Título de Técnico Superior, this title is an entry to higher studies but this is not an academic degree. Similarly like the school system, university of Paraguay is also divided in to two stages, first (Título de Grado: Licenciado, Professional Title) and second (Título de Postgrado: Especialista, Magister, Doctor).
Special emphasis is also given in the training of teachers for basic/primary and secondary and higher education. Basic school teachers have to receive training in a teacher training institute for 4 years. After competition of the training, a teacher gets a title of Profesor de la Educación Escolar Básica.
Secondary school teachers also undergo four years of training, and after the successful completion of the program, they get a title of Profesor de Enseñanza Secundaria. Lecturers of the university also have to complete special course for one semester at the institute which is known as Instituto Superior de Educación. They fall in the categories of Profesor Titular, Profesor Adjunto, Profesor Asistente. There are two universities in Paraguay, National and Catholic University.

The normal monthly wage can be of $ 2500. Nevertheless salary also varies in private and public schools.
