Although historical sites and unique cultural features have always made Spain a favorite among the tourists but tourism jobs took off only in the middle of 1950s. To start off, it was mainly based on the recreational asset of the Mediterranean seashore areas. The country has less than 1 million tourists in 1950 but the number began to increase steadily reaching more than 34 million in 1973 and more than 50 million in 2003. This radical increase also affected the tourism jobs in Spain leading to a tremendous increase in the number of jobs in this sector.
The significance of tourism on Spanish economy is substantial. The net tourists receipts average to about 5 per cent of the GDP in the year 1970s but in 2003 that amount increased to almost 10 per cent and the receipts increased to 14.7 billion US$ - an amount that is enough to cover the country's merchandise trade deficit. In the year 2003 Spain received almost about 50 million foreign visitors and this is almost 12 per cent more than those who arrived in 1999.
