Limerick is situated in the province of Munster, in the Midwest of the Republic of Ireland. It is at the heart of the region dubbed “the Midwest”. This region encompasses country Limerick, country Clare, north country Tipperary and northwest country Kerry, with its focal point centered on Limerick and it environs within eight kilometer radius. The region is possibly the main economic region outside Dublin and Cork. Its economic success has been driven in part by the University of Limerick and Shannon Development(an economic development agency) whose precursor was SFADCO, an economic agency that provided tax incentives to companies locating in the area surrounding Shannon Airport. All these favored the growth of a number of jobs in Limerick.
 
Historically Limerick was an agricultural commodity driven economy, due to its position as the first major port along the river Shannon. It is one of the major meat processing areas of Ireland. Other industries include confectionery and flour production. With the changing economy many multinational companies have their headquarters based in Limerick. Dell have their main European Manufacturing Facility in Raheen business park ,Limerick. This contributes to about 5.8% of the Irish economy in the year 2002. Analog Devices have also their manufacturing base in Raheen, 3 KM south-west from the city. This site employs more than 1,000people. Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Vistakon also has a large facility in Castleroy. This is one of the largest contact lens manufacturing plants in the world and is located in the national technology plant. All these show the contemporary development of jobs in Limerick .
