Public Schools:
There are four different types of school departments in the public school system in Maine. At the base level, there is local school. Headed by a superintendent, a local school serves a single municipality. It offers classes from kindergarten through 12th grade. There are also some local schools that have classes up to grade 8.
The second type of school department is School Union. A school union may consist of two or more school departments, having same superintendent. There might be some independent school districts without a high school.
These school districts may be a part of the school union. However, in school union, one of the schools would have a high school. The students of the school union have the option to attend the neighboring school districts, the fees for which would be borne by the school union.
The third type of school district can be named as Maine School Administrative District (MSAD). It’s a regional school district, integrating two or more towns into a single school department. This may consist of a high school and middle school. A central board governs the entire district here.
The fourth type of school district in Maine is the Community School District or Consolidated School District (CSD).
